Oil surges as Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia eclipse diplomatic efforts

Oil prices rose on Wednesday after Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement stepped up attacks on Saudi targets, overshadowing recent diplomatic talks aimed at calming the region.

price fluctuations

At 10:05ET (14:05GMT), Brent crude futures were up 1.0%, trading at $115.06 a barrel. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures rose 1.9% to $101.83 a barrel. Last week the market briefly hit a six-month high above $117 a barrel, but prices fell back over the past two sessions.

कूटनीतिक वार्ता

On Monday, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan met Iranian officials in Tehran. According to Iranian state media, the three countries said they would continue dialogue to promote peace and security.

Houthi attacks

The Houthis announced on Tuesday that they had fired a ballistic missile at Saudi Arabia's Rastanura refinery, highlighting how vulnerable the kingdom's energy sites are. Earlier in the week they claimed to have attacked Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport and pumping stations along the East-West oil pipeline, which lets crude bypass the Strait of Hormuz.

These attacks raise new concerns about the security of alternative export routes, especially as shipping through Hormuz – a key chokepoint for world oil – is trying to recover after severe disruptions caused by the Iran-Israel war.

market sentiment

ING analysts wrote that the recent rally suggests the likelihood of renewed market conflict is high. He expects traders to wait for clear signals after the US midterm elections on November 3 before placing heavy bets in either direction.

Media outlets have also floated the idea that former President Donald Trump might consider a brief, sharp military strike against Iran after a midterm deal is reached.

U.S. inventory data

U.S. crude oil stockpiles fell by 2.03 million barrels in the week ended Oct. 23, according to the American Petroleum Institute, beating expectations for a 0.8 million barrel increase. The draw followed a decline of 4.93 million barrels a week earlier.

Gasoline stocks increased by 2.39 million barrels, and distillate inventories increased by 380,000 barrels. Traders are now eyeing the official Energy Information Administration report due today.

future outlook

The Federal Reserve's policy decision on Wednesday could also provide clues about the broader economic picture and future fuel demand.

Conclusion for Crude Oil Traders

  • Houthi missile attacks on Saudi facilities are pushing up the risk premium, sending crude oil prices upward.
  • Diplomatic talks are ongoing, but any increase could quickly reverse recent price increases.
  • US inventory draws are providing further support to the market, while upcoming Fed minutes could add another layer of direction.
  • Traders should keep an eye on the post-midterm political scenario and any new Houthi activity before making large-scale position changes.
