Turmeric Prices Jump as Demand Returns and Stockists Pull Back

Turmeric closed 2.59% higher at Rs 25,550, driven by a fresh wave of buying, fewer sales from stockists and a tight spot market. Holders are now hesitant to off‑load their stocks after the earlier sell‑off, while worries over dry weather and a possible El Niño are keeping the bullish mood alive.

Drought in Karnataka has raised red flags for the crop. A joint survey by state agencies put losses at 13,446 ha, worth about Rs 18,824 lakh, out of a total cultivated area of roughly 18,000‑20,000 ha. Carry‑forward stocks are now estimated at around 15 lakh bags, down from more than 20 lakh bags last season, cutting the safety buffer.

On the flip side, India’s turmeric output is expected to grow about 15% in 2026, helped by a roughly 20% jump in planted area, especially in Maharashtra. A better monsoon across Maharashtra, Telangana and North Karnataka has eased some of the earlier crop worries, and filled reservoirs in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, improving water for the plants. Re‑sowing in North Karnataka is also done after recent rains, and crop conditions are looking up. Still, a dry spell early in the growth phase could hurt yields and keep prices firm.

Export numbers tell a mixed story. Shipments in July 2026 fell 10% YoY to 13,489 tonnes from 15,071 tonnes a year earlier. Yet total exports from April to July rose 4% to 65,476 tonnes. Sales to Turkey exploded 431% to 3,007 tonnes, to Sri Lanka up 644% at 156 tonnes, and to Nigeria jumped 983% to 69 tonnes. The EU’s demand for Integrated Pest Management‑certified turmeric is adding extra support, although tighter residue rules have led to rejections of non‑compliant lots and discounts on commercial‑grade product.

In the local Nizamabad spot market, turmeric slipped 0.11% to Rs 22,803.3, showing that regional trends can differ.

On the technical side, buying interest is picking up. Open interest rose 6.42% to 17,745 contracts, and the price gained Rs 646. Support levels sit at Rs 24,900 and Rs 24,250, while resistance is at Rs 26,050; a break above could push the price toward Rs 26,550.

Conclusion for Businesses and Traders

With supply tightening, dry‑weather worries and strong overseas demand, turmeric prices are likely to stay on the upside. Traders and merchants may want to stay long or consider buying on dips, while keeping an eye on weather updates and export regulations.
