At last, things are moving forward again between Washington and Ottawa. After weeks of delays, the White House says a major trade deal between the United States and Canada is coming soon.
White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett shared an update on Sunday, saying the two sides are "very close to finally having an agreement" as negotiations rapidly gain momentum.
Talks gained momentum after political delay
Appearing on Fox News, Hassett explained that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick spent all week in direct talks with Canadian leaders. Getting to this stage was not easy. Up until recently, political friction across the northern border had brought discussions to a complete standstill.
Hassett said the heavy voter turnout in Canada's elections, as well as Alberta's secession efforts, have made it nearly impossible to sit down at the bargaining table. Now that those hurdles have been cleared, officials are working hard to cross the finish line.
Strong growth vs. increasing energy tension
Hassett seemed very confident about the broader business environment in the United States, describing it as "the best economy we have ever seen." He pointed to solid annual economic growth figures ranging between 3% and 4%.
He also argued that falling fuel costs could boost growth even further. He echoed comments from US President Donald Trump, who recently claimed that fuel and energy prices would soon "fall like a rock."
However, global energy markets still face serious headwinds. The ongoing conflict involving Iran has put traders at risk, especially as Iran has effectively blocked traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. That single waterway carries about 20% of the entire world's petroleum exports.
Those supply threats are already showing up in consumer bills. Official data showed annual consumer price inflation rose to 3.7% in September, from 3.4% in August.

- Sticky Inflation:Inflation reaching 3.7% in September means the central bank will keep a very close eye on fuel prices before easing policy.
