Silver Takes a Big Step Back

Silver prices took a sharp hit today, falling by 5.45% to close at Rs 179,132. A mix of stubborn US inflation, stagnant economic growth and renewed bets that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates put heavy pressure on the white metal.

The latest US PCE price index jumped 0.5% month-on-month in September, marking its sharpest rise since March. On an annual basis, inflation picked up to 3.6%, while core PCE inflation climbed to 3.1%. At the same time, the US economy showed no signs of slowing down. Third-quarter GDP grew by 3.4%, beating the 3.2% analysts expected, mainly driven by solid household spending and heavy spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The Federal Reserve left interest rates alone at its recent meeting, but traders are not convinced the pause will last. Futures markets now price in almost a 75% chance of another rate hike in December. Whenever interest rate bets rise, non-yielding assets like silver tend to lose their appeal quickly.

The Big Debate on Supply and Demand

Analysts are split on how tight physical silver supplies will be over the next year. HSBC thinks the silver deficit will shrink dramatically, dropping from 140 million ounces in 2025 to just 5 million ounces in 2026. They point to higher mine output, more scrap recycling, and slower demand from both jewelry makers and industrial users.

However, groups like the Silver Institute and Metals Focus see things differently. They expect the market to run an annual deficit for the sixth year in a row. Under their forecast, the supply gap widens from 40.3 million ounces in 2025 to 46.3 million ounces in 2026.

They expect overall demand to drop by 2%, with industrial fabrication slipping 3% to a four-year low. Yet, a strong 18% bounce in retail demand for silver coins and bars could help cushion that drop. Even though metal moving out of US warehouses has eased short-term liquidity, global stockpiles have dropped by around 762 million ounces since 2021. Meanwhile, silver sitting in London vaults went up 1.95% during September, reaching 28,985 tonnes.

Key Technical Levels to Keep on Your Radar

Looking at the market action, short sellers are clearly taking charge. Open interest grew by 1.36% to 18,105 contracts while prices dropped by Rs 10,321, a classic sign of fresh bearish bets entering the market.

Right now, silver is trying to hold support near Rs 175,880. If prices break below that mark, the next floor sits around Rs 172,620. On the flip side, any bounce will face stiff selling resistance near Rs 185,330. Only a clear break above that level can push the metal back up towards Rs 191,530.

What Should You Actually Own Right Now?

Making good trades always comes down to good data. Going with your gut feeling has its moments, but getting emotional often leads to bad entries and costly exits. Combining real institutional data with simple, clear market tracking gives you an edge without needing a fice degree. It will not make every trade a winner, but it definitely keeps you on the right side of the trend more often than not.

Key Takeaways for Silver Traders and Investors

  • Watch the Fed:A 75% probability of a December rate hike means silver rallies could face quick selling until interest rate expectations cool off.
  • Monitor Key Supports:Keep a close eye on the Rs 175,880 level. A clean break below it opens the door to Rs 172,620.
  • Mind the Supply Clash:While bank forecasts like HSBC suggest supply deficits will vanish by 2026, long-term vault drain since 2021 shows physical tightness is far from completely resolved.
